Ryon Chambers, 38, and Ann-Marie Finegan, 26, came out as the overall winners in the male and female open run category of the Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run yesterday.
The annual run, walk and wheelchair 5K race held in New Kingston celebrated its 20th anniversary and saw a record-breaking turnout of over 26,519 participants.
The open run and walk categories are based on the best gun time and includes all registered runners and walkers. Chambers completed the race in 18:28 minutes, while Finegan clocked a time of 23:27 minutes.
Coming in second and third for the male open run categories were Dario Grandison, from Barbados and Keroy Benjamin with qualifying times of 19:19 and 19:40 minutes, respectively. Karlene Blagrove and Krishna Tully were the second and third place winners of the female open race category with qualifying time of 24:09 and 24:37 minutes.
Rounding out the top three male open walk category in first, second and third were Duwell Allen, Gladstone Johnson and Jahveney Edwards. Winning times for the men were 29:18, 32:20 and 32:43 minutes, respectively. In the women’s open walk category Paula Sinclair placed first with a winning time of 37:34 minutes, Latayna Bispott placed second with a time of 38:32 and Kenecia McDonald third place with a time of 41:43 minutes.
Male and female participants in the wheelchair race rolled in with top results, Para-Olympian Alphanso Cunningham and Sylvia Grant placed first with times of 25:15 and 31:23 minutes, respectively. Coming in second and third for the male wheelchair category were Marcus Banton and Narvado Griffiths. In the female wheelchair category Dorothy Hamilton and Deborah Johnson placed second and third, respectively.
This year’s Sigma Run patron, Olympian Usain Bolt, was the honorary starter for the run portion of the race while Miss Jamaica Universe 2017 and 2nd runner-up in Miss Universe 2017 Davina Bennett set off the wheelchair participants, while Fitness Coach and CEO of Dynamic Lifestyle Patrice J White set off the walkers. All patrons had their own Sigma Run team out on the road representing.
As with previous years, the 5K race started on Knutsford Boulevard, turning left onto Trafalgar Road before continuing onto Waterloo Road where after a turn at West Kings House Road would bring it down Constant Spring Road before making a left on Hope Road, right onto Winchester Road, right onto Ruthven Road and a final left onto Half Way Tree Road and finishing on Oxford Road by Emancipation Park.
The charity run raised $50 million in cash and kind and the run’s two 2018 beneficiaries are the St Christopher’s School for the Deaf and the Spanish Town Neonatal Unit.
