Jamaican cricketers Paul Palmer and John Ross Campbell were among 28 recipients of University of the West Indies sports and academic scholarships on Monday, during the launch of the 2018 CB Group UWI 5K and Smart Eggs Kids K in Kingston.
The scholarships are valued at just over $J8million or US$61,000. Each scholarship is valued at about J$300,000 or US$2200.
The 5K is the university’s largest fundraiser for scholarships that awarded to student-athletes and academic achievers each and this year’s event will be held on Sunday, November 11. Oshane Wright was the third cricketer of the 13 student-athletes among the recipients.
Also among the recipients were 400m runner Oshaine Levy, long jumper Monief Heslop, and triple jumper Tamoya Walters, netballers Rashawna Gibbs and Brithany McKenzie and rugby players Romario Bartley and Delano Jarrett.
Female footballer Tramaine Brown was also a recipient.
Elizabeth Buchanan-Hind, Chair of the fundraiser said the university wants to create opportunities for even more students of the university.
“There is nothing more gratifying than to see our students become beacons of light in their communities as they boldly step into the sphere of higher academic learning, no matter what their circumstances might be,” she said.

More than 25 sponsors have come on board this year to support the 5K that will take place in and around the environs of the university. The deadline for entries is November 2.
